4001 controls: wanna take a peek while I got her open?

Post by kiramdear »

Well the dreaded moment had come, and it was time to fix my bass. Someone had rewired it for dual mono but I wanted to restore the stereo ability. Not being able to afford a pro, I bit the bullet and opened her up. After all, it's not rocket science. Armed with "Joey's Bass Notes" PDF and my trusty shooting iron, I hemmed and hawed, studied the diagram again and again and then held my nose and jumped in to work. Here's the way she looked before I started.

Sorry, no after pictures. Suffice to say that in conclusion all is well in ric-o-soundville. I sussed out the necessary changes and affected them.

That's great, Kira! So glad to see that my wiring diagram helped and that you have the determination and skill for rewiring the 4001 yourself. :D
Nice that you have your Rick-O-Sound back. Great job!
The JETGLO finish name should be officially changed to JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

Kira, looks to me like the jacks were either replaced at one time or rewired. I have been through just what you did with this, and let me add electronics is my profession and education, and it took a bit of head scratching to figure out just how the switching mono jack works in conjunction with the jumpers to the stereo connector. Great job you can be proud of.

Yeah, John, the one jack was sloppily rewired for dual mono output, and a little hot jumper added between the volume pots (discovered the third time open). There was some sloppy ground wire connections that were troublesome so I cleaned those up too. And I didn't strip any screw holes :)

And I'm loving the stereo space with two amps. I put the neck p'up into my bass amp and the treble into my guitar workstation for an awesome spacious effect with both p'ups on. Definitely the sum is more than the total of the parts. Can't wait to use it in recording.

Reference to the Rosetta Stone provided me with a translation of the inscriptions in the cavity. One marking reads, "The Pharaoh is drunk tonight."
