Weird finish?

Post by daytripper1964 »

My friend recently sent me this photo of this guitar he was gonna buy. I couldn't help but notice the weird finish this had. Does anyone know if this is a custom finish or a refinish (what I'm thinking)

Definitely not factory, I think it's safe to say. Looks interesting though, kind of reminds me of the tiger stripe 381 that Paul w did recently.

That's a weird finish all right! It looks like someone took a white 620 (they came with black trim in the '80's) and painted it gray with a broom! Reminds me of a blues tune I used to do years ago--don't know who wrote it; it wasn't me:
I got a '57 Chevrolet, painted it green with a broom...

The motor don't run, but the back seat sure got a lotta room!

That is one of those rareish silver ones with severe checking!

Either that or a White with Black Trim that has really been through the wringer, with severe checking....

Nasty mark on the headstock - bad reaction to a wall hanger? Or just a fault in the photograph?

Looks like a badly checked Silver to me.

It hurts my brain to try and imagine how that egregious amount of checking was actually achieved...... :?

It can be done! In the early 90s I saw a 610/12 at Downtown guitars that was new, and had this issue, in saying that they had a good price on it.

I actually like the look of this crazed silver beastie......

I didn't know they did a lot of Black Bindings on 620 in the 1980s... learn something new about Rics all the time.
I kind of like the interesting wood grain finish job on this one.... definitely different. :)

From 1985 (or so) on, every Rick finish came standard with black trim except Fireglo and Jetglo.
