Cracking on 610 Neck

Post by matt_L »

Recently bought this RIckenbacker 610.

It plays great, stays and tune.. Doesn't seem to have any problems.

There is however, this crack in the neck close to the nut.

It does not seem too bad, but I was curious whether it will seriously effect the guitar in the future, or when it comes to adjusting the truss rod/ changing strings.

Matt - more pics would be appreciated! Looks like someone over tightened the Truss rods... These cracks are not uncommon in older RICS.

What year is yours? The SN will be on the jackplate.

I own a JG 610 from Jan 1991 myself...

What kind of pictures should I post specifically?

Mine is a 96'

Do you think it's necessary to professionally get the crack fixed?

96'?

Perhaps, you meant to say '96? 8)

Odd to see that type of crack with the new style rods, this would not be uncommon with the old style rods (pre-early '80s) when someone adjusted the rods like it were a Gibson! :!: (Infer what you will. )

Yup, that exact one.

I've been looking for a decent priced Ric the past few weeks, and I thought I'd jump on it.

It does play very well. Glad to have finally bought one.. Now my next purchase this summer will be a 330 in Fireglo or Jetglo.

610s and 330s are both excellent RICS... Congrats on such a good score on your first... Odds are it won't be your last!

330s in Canada used are in the $1300-$1600 range. If you buy one from the US, avoid using UPS to ship it at all costs, as it can add 40% to the purchase price...

Me I like features like x bracing, the smaller headstock and kluson tuners which make examples prior to 1982 my preferred guitars. My most recent RIC though (a BG 620) is from 2002 and I am very fond of it as well... It all comes down to taste.

Long and McQuades often has them on the wall (Cambridge particularly), as does a RIC dealership on Grand Island just across the border. But for service, set up and sheer kindness there are dealers like Chris at Pick of Ricks in NJ that ship to Canada all the time and come highly recommended here.

Welcome to the Ontario Rickenbacker club! lol We really should have another Ontario Rickenbacker gathering like in 2009

I don't think that's a truss rod crack. I think it's been dropped on the headstock...

Update:

It's currently being repaired by Fred Gabrsek of Freddy's Frets. I've heard many good things about his work.

Will post pictures with the repair.
