Headstock size

Post by basshead »

I was comparing my '77 4001 against my '09 4003 tonight and noticed that the 4003 headstock is quite a bit larger than the 4001. I read that the headstocks were shortened in 1969 but what year did the head stocks go big again?

There is more to it than just being shorter, the shape of the perimeter is more like the vintage basses, too. :D

Do you mean the 4001 headstock shape and perimeter is more like a vintage bass or the 4003 headstock is more like a vintage?

The newer 4003 has the '60s vintage look.

The newer headstocks are shaped to look like a 60's era bass, nice look IMO, but are 1/2" shorter than a 60's instrument. The early CS and V63s basses, up to '97 or so, also had a long headstock as on a '60s vintage.

The shortness comes in mainly at the nut end of the headstock.
