Removing Spray Paint From Tolex Covered Cases

Post by opticnerve »

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this...but, here it goes.

Is there a way to remove spray paint from '60s silver Tolex Ric cases without damaging the Tolex?

Any info will be appreciated!

I tried acetone once. It took the paint off no problem, but I let it sit on the tolex too long and it made the tolex soft (rubbery) and separate from the case. I guess don't try that!

Paint thinner is less abrasive, that might work but will take more elbow grease.

I have had good results using something called "Klean-Strip Strip-X Stripper." (Claims to be America's #1 stripper brand.) It's a thick brushable clear paste in a metal can. I think I got it at Home Depot.

I've brushed it on, let it sit for 30 minutes, then rubbed it off with a wire brush -- lightly applied. I've cleaned paint off several tolex cases this way. It does slightly soften the tolex during application, but not by very much and the softening is temporary. It can also be re-applied if the first round doesn't get all the gunk off.

Good luck!
