How wide is your 330/360 neck?

Post by Dom »

I have a ''98 330 in Turquoise which I bought new at GC. So tonight I finally busted out the micrometer.

'98 330
52mm at the bridge E to E,
51mm at the 12th fret
43.20mm at the nut with 39mm E to E.

My '88 370WB
50mm at the bridge E to E,
49.5mm at the 12th
42mm at the nut and the replaced nut is 38.75mm E to E.

I wasn't able to find the bridge spacing specs online but I tell ya those extra 2mm at the bridge make a lot of difference. So my 330 may not be quite as wide as a 660 but it is slightly overweight. Now get this, when I bought it from GC it was marked down and I was told that it had just been returned. Why? Because they didn't like the neck!

330s have unbound fingerboards, 370s however have bound fingerboards.
Aren't the unbound fingerboards all just that tiny bit wider than the bound fingerboards in general for Rickies?

Oh yeah, I measured across the nut going onto the neck rather than the binding.

The difference between my two makes sense, the 98 has the modern sharper horns too. Also none of my friends could get the feel of the '88 but all loved the '98. However since the '88 is my main I'm comfortable on anything. Because of the girthy neck I use the '98 for slide but I really want to put it back to lower action and in standard tuning again.

I'm contemplating building supro style res-o-glass kit as a dedicated slide guitar with a 24 fret, bolt on 330 width neck with a combo headstock & fairly flat fingerboard. It would be combo inspired but not be a clone. I just have to jumpstart myself back into building guitars. The last guitar I built was in '95 and I wish I stuck to it. However my dad has built 5 amazing tenor ukes in just the last few years. I can't let the old man show me up like that!
