Would a 4001 lend itself to becoming a hollow body?

Hell yeah, that'd be awesome!

I reckon I might have to keep an eye out for another wreck on eBay and make it into a hollow body

I think your arm would be almost completely covering the hole as you play.

Looking at the original survey at the top of this thread reminds me of the sometimes narrow mindset of Rickenbacker player/owner/collectors with the NO side of the survey implying that anyone thinking this may be a good or at least interesting idea is "so stupid". It's a good thing that the well known Rickenbacker bass players didn't start out with that limitation when they modified their basses to suit their needs and tastes. It reminds me of why I don't post pics of my Rickenbacker based projects here that much anymore.

Nicely put

I still want to have a go at doing this but have decided to finish my current wreck project as standard. Once I convince the Boss Lady that I need another Rick project and I can find a cheap 4003, I'll try it.

I have a cheap "Fenderish" clone here that I'll have a go at first. When I eventually get around to it, I'll post some pics...

Excellent and exactly what I though, the smaller pickup footprint leaves room for the slash.

It is nice but I had in mind a standard 4003 to look at, pickguard and all. If anyone has an old 4003 they want to donate to the cause, I'll do it...
