Nut removal on 60's 336/12
Hi gang. If I wanted to remove this, should I just tap it in the direction of the TRC (after removing TRC)? A search here makes me think I should not 1) tap it sideways 2) use heat.

The last two I took off Jason I used a craft knife ie a sharp blade and cut/scored lightly round the edge next to the paintwork then got a screwdriver and tapped it off in the direction of the headstock /trc.Both times it popped of easily.I used the score method as to minimise a chip if it happened when the nut pops off
Failing that hit it with a sledgehammer.

I like to take a run-up at it; windmilling a lump hammer.

I'm going to have Jim Albin work on it, he has the delicate touch and infinite patience of an experienced master craftsman.

It should be easy a light tap and it will be ok. ..anyway its mapleglo your not gonna damage anything that can't be touched up easily.
Maybe use a hammer drill just to be sure....

Yes, gently tap it towards the TRC. It's held on with minimal glue (or some other adhesive), but use a flat-blade type tool against the inside of the nut to tap it. I use a flat paint scraper tool.

Nice....but next time shake it up a bit and go for the Scissor kick option your guaranteed satisfaction.godber wrote:I like to take a run-up at it; windmilling a lump hammer.
Ok slight thread drift but in the same vein.I recently had 12 new frets put on a 330 and a new nut so i let my Tech do the job..So i bought a Ric nut from a UK distributor, ive bought a couple from him,and sent it along for the work to be undertaken.
Low and behold i get a call saying the Offical Ric nut wasn't tall enough do i want a shim put in or a custom nut fitted....Anyway went for the custom nut and all is good.I suppose this is what happens when youve a slab of fretboard from the early 80s. Incidentally, comparing the wider string spacing on the new nut this would have caused problems with the neck on this 330 as the string would have sat way to close to the edge of the board and no doubt would have` slipped off` when fretting. So in saying all that Jason when putting on the new nut compare the string spacing from the old nut to the new one if its too close to the edge get one made.
