660/12 moving in vintage case

Post by Kyle »

Has anyone else had this bother that when the guitar is in the case, it doesn't sit into the grove of the cushion for the neck, so that it then moves with a 'thunk' in the case when the neck moves south, and the headstock hits the bottom end of the case.

What's the fixable solution? Only thing I can think of is attach a Velcro strap on the neck cushion to keep it in place, but this would probably be a lot of work.

I thought 660's shipped in the new molded 600 series case.

I like these newer style cases - there is no movement what so ever when you use one of these. Most of my 620s are all in these.

Unless yours is a Tom Petty made in the early to mid 90s, it should not have a vintage style case.

Most 660-12 models were issued with vintage reissue silver cases though mid-2004.

And yes, I have had that problem with a 660-12 moving around in its vintage case. My solution was to lay a small towel on top of the neck before closing the case.

My 2008 660/12 LH FG (which I no longer have) was shipped with a vintage silver tolex case. But then again if memory serves me right, all leftys are shipped with silver tolex cases.

+1 This works for my vintage style case, as well. If you want to be anal about it, make sure the towel is 100% cotton.

I don't care for the plastic cases at all. If you open the case while it's leaning vertically against a wall, the bass will slide out. Both of my current Rick basses have factory 70's cases, while my double neck has a custom built case.
