320/325 6string conversion to 12string

Post by grumpylaird »

Hi everybody,

I have been brooding over the idea of converting a 320 or 325 6 string into a 12 string, copycatting the Lennon 12 string short scale model. I have done a bit of lathery, but I would very much like to hear your thoughts and expertise...
Has it been tried before?
Has it been done successfully before?
Where are the pitfalls?
Is it madness?

Biggest trouble for me is, I've never been able to compare the specs of the short scale 6 and 12 strings in terms of neck width, headstock width etc....

Thanks for any feedback...

I've got a 320/12v63 if you'd sooner save the hassle and just buy one? One of the 1986 reissues.

They're neat! But just buy one.

I agree with both Graham and Dawg.

Now, if you were going to do a tenor conversion...

The main problem is grafting enough extra wood onto the headstock to accommodate the tuners, then refinishing the entire instrument so it looks like it should.

Graham very kindly offered to sell his. I couldn't be happier and I am sure it would not have worked out the way I wanted had I tried to pursue the idea of converting a 6string. Indeed, I now reckon it' d have been blasphemy.
