4th of July "Block Party" Micro-Mini Con

Post by 8mileshigher »

Some friends of Paul A. in Belmont Shore, Long Beach asked for some help with some live music for their "Block Party". It was billed as the First Annual Glendora Ave Block Party. Some great folks there on Glendora Avenue, who put on one great event, with everyone on the street participating, water slide for the kids, barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers and lots of refreshments to keep us from evaporating in the hot California sun. They had a big raffle and raised a bunch of money for supporting the local library (and even paid the band !). We all walked down to the beach around 9:00 PM to see the fantastic fireworks display going on at the Queen Mary, berthed in Long Beach and quite as few of the neighbors there on Ocean street were putting on a great fireworks display too.

So Paul put this gig together on about 24 hours notice.... and Friday afternoon we all met down at Bombshelter Rehearsal studios and put together 10 songs for the event. Robert S. and Alberto C. who are Glendora Avenue residents, played bass and drums respectively, but had never played together and Robert's bass had been in the closet for years and he dusted it off for the occasion. Paul had Big Red :D and his 42 year old, Italian made 8) Vox Phantom 12 string (with factory whammy bar... no kidding, twleve little string holes drilled through it...) I had my 360-12 and my 330. Paul did some classic, spooky sounding awesome leads 8) on the Vox twelve string on Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" and "Seven Seas"...

Set list was:
Plimsouls: Zero Hour, Now
Might Lemon Drops: Inside Out
Bunnymen: Killing Moon, Seven Seas, Sugar Kisses, Rescue
The Church: Under the Milky Way
Plimsouls: Million Miles Away
Greg Kihn Band: The Break Up Song

We had a great Independence Day in Long Beach ... hope you did too ! Pics to follow.

Looks like you all had a great time, more fun than our block party! We did have some good fireworks, all set off by ourselves, including lots of overhead mortar shell types (pretty much like the professional ones, you can buy those here in Montana, great fun!). No music though, that would have made it perfect...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Looks like you guys had good fun! I would have joined you if I didn't have a prior commitment. Looks like you had a bassist, but he didn't play a Rick! :P
