JakeFest in SoCal during October...who's in?

Post by JakeK »

Hey, all you SoCal forumites. I've been wanting to go to SoCal for a while now, and now is the perfect time to say I'm doing whatever I can to make it happen.

I've been wanting to go to tapings of "Two and a Half Men", "The Big Bang Theory" and "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" for quite a while now, and after doing some talking with my mom, it looks like it's going to happen this year. I've been in contact with Paul A about the possibilities, and now that I'm taking my job into fifth gear by doing part time work rather than quitting, I know that I can make this happen.

I sent Paul a schedule with the possible dates and the schedule of events.
Thursday night: Arrive at airport and rent a car
Friday night: Two and a Half Men taping
Saturday: RRF Jam
Sunday: Disneyland
Monday: Jay Leno taping
Tuesday: Big Bang Theory taping
Wednesday: go home

Saturday and Sunday can be flipped around if they need to.

We have a cousin who lives in (I think) Sherman Oaks and said the dates that work for her are 10/15-10/19 and 10/22-10/26.

Who's in and which dates work for what people?

The Saturdays in question would be either Saturday, October 16th, or Saturday, October 23rd. I haven't had time to even try and put anything together yet; I've been job hunting for a legal assistant position, and I've had a really nasty case of the flu all week.

Sherman Oaks is in the Valley, which is a ways from our usual minicon venue in Garden Grove. The last one was packed to the gills attendance-wise, so I'm going to look into a larger restaurant/bar with a stage venue, in the same area. Collin suggested the British and Dominion Pub, and there's also the possibility of a hall. Most of the regular participants live in the south L.A. County/Orange County Area, so the venue would likely be in Garden Grove/North O.C. area.

I can't promise anything yet; I'm not sure if I'm available those dates:
1) Smiling face down's booking manager is putting together a Cali Coastal mini tour for us in October. So far we have Saturday, October 9th in OC, but I don't know what the rest of the dates are. Everyone works, so we're doing a different town ever weekend. There's a possibility we'll be playing one or both of those weekends, but I don't know anything yet.
2.) One of my wonderful law school professors hasn't even posted a syllabus yet, another has only posted the syllabus through week 2, and the third doesn't list the midterm, so I am completely in the dark as to when MTs are going to happen; I don't think we'll have them that early, based on past experience, but it's only one semester's experience; it's a new semester, and different professors from those I've studied under.

Anyway, those are the potential obstacles to my participation/attendance. I should know more in a week or so. All of the locals know the drill, so even if I can't be there, y'all know how to put it together. :D Meanwhile, check your calenders, Friends, and brush up on your Petty, BJ-era Stones, and Kinks; IIRC, those are three of Jake's fave bands, and all three of those bands have reasonably easy songs to learn that would be fun to play at jams.

My sister's birthday is October 22, so I probably won't be available that weekend.

It all depends on when my mom gets the tickets. We're shooting for 10/15 at earliest.

Paul, my mom says our cousin lives on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Not Sherman Oaks. Don't know if that bit of trivia helps or not.

Paul and I will be in charge of keeping up who's in and what to play. It seems like Gary's out for 10/22 and Collin's in all around.

A few days ago, Paulie and I were talking about a possible mini jam or even a confluence in October.
Count me in.
The JETGLO finish name should be officially changed to JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

A jam with Jake? :D Yeah, let me know the date and I'll cruise down!

Until then I'll be working on my chops.

Count me in too, Jake !! :D

I like this one from your list ---- While My Guitar Gently Weeps (with Collin playing Clapton's part!) 8)
BTW --- which Stones songs should we learn ? Skip knows a bunch of them !

Did you get your tickets lined up for those TV audience shows ?
(By the way, if your calendar gets flip flopped for the Jay Leno TV show, he also performs every Sunday night at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach)

I'm out for October 22-Anniversary-but the 15th is cool.
Paul-check out "The Starting Gate" in Los Alamitos. They have a large room, nice stage, and let us use it free for the Surfguitar101 Convention the last two years. I'll ask Jeff who handled it for details. It may be a while, as I expect he will be sleeping for about a week to recover.

Is there going to be a Pre-jam Jam scheduled ??  :D
The Pre Jam activities are always half the fun !!! And we have to get Jake properly introduced to the local customs .... :)

I could do a pre-jam, but it would have to be before 6:00pm PST

Stones songs:
Satisfaction
The Last Time
Get Off of My Cloud
19th Nervous Breakdown
Not Fade Away (good acoustic 12-string here)
Little Red Rooster (for anyone willing enough to play slide)
Stupid Girl
Down Home Girl
Honky Tonk Women
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Let's Spend the Night Together
Time Is on My Side
It's All Over Now

I can do "Satisfaction", "The Last Time" and "Get Off of My Cloud".

I have a big book with the Stones stuff when they were with London Records. Whole bunch of alternate tunings on them.

Jake needs to know the Jam rules are no more than 4 chords and something you can play intoxicated.
