I'll bring my Ric 360 12 string & 6 string Guitars. I can play Rhythm on some tunes. I can play Bass too but don't own a Ric Bass yet. Will I get thrown out on my ear if I bring my Hofner Icon Bass? It's humble but sounds quite good. I can sing & harmonize & play some Harmonica If needed. I could also bring an Epi Casino & Gibson J160E.

Sounds like a fun event. Looking forward to it,

I've only been to a half dozen or so of these SoCal jams, but here are some of my unofficial observations...
-- Ricks are preferred. I'd leave the others home. My bass of choice is a MusicMan and I have yet to bring it to a Rick jam. There will be plenty of basses and guitars and most forum members are willing to share, as long as you treat their equipment with as much (or more) respect than you would treat your own.
-- With some exceptions, there is an unwritten rule about staying on stage for extended periods of time. There are many members, especially guitarists, and everyone who wants stage time should be able to get it. I try to keep my time to 6 - 8 songs or a half hour, whichever comes first. Drummers and keyboard players (when scarce) tend to play for as long as they are needed, or until someone else is available to fill the position.
-- Unless you are a major world famous music superstar, try and keep your stage volume in line with the others who are playing. It's a team effort, not a solo showcase.

Like I said, these are just what I've taken away from the jams I've attended. Maybe some of the more veteran forumites can correct or add to these. See you there, Glenn. Tom

I've only been to last year's SCARF/Ricktoberfest, and I can already tell you that Rics are the main instruments used. The versatility the SoCal guys can get out of any Ric is mind-blowing. From blues to rockabilly to jazz to R&B/soul to pop to hard rock, they can do it. In fact, Collin Whitley got a Clapton-esque wail from a 381/6 for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

The amps are mostly Vox, but some Fenders creep in, and the Fenders are what I use, mostly because I don't like anything else. And I'm going to echo Tom in that no-one's ego creeps in in that one tries to be the loudest one there. You don't see Joey V or Scott J running through an Ampeg SVT, because those will overpower anything, be it a Fender Princeton or a Marshall JTM Half-stack.

I've got a small sum of money in the bank that is being saved up for this trip. I am excited about it and I'm hoping Warner Studios will be filming the season premieres of the newly revived Two and a Half Men (sans Charlie Sheen, thank goodness!) and The Big Bang Theory during that time. The night before SCARF/Ricktoberfest, I met Jon Cryer (http://turbo.inquisitr.com/wp-content/2 ... cryer.jpeg) at Two and a Half Men, which those forumites who saw him from Pretty in Pink were happy for me. Rich, Joey and Paulie couldn't have timed SCARF better around those tapings, and I still can't thank them enough for it. Hopefully, this time in two months, tickets will be released for those shows filming that weekend.

I fell in love with every Ric there, particularly Collin's Rose Morris 1993 12-string with custom fretboard. I'm hoping to see and play Gary Clauson's 1998 Pete Townshend and play once again his 370/12 McGuinn. The McGuinn is the most versatile 12-string guitar around, a shame it never was permanent production. And now I don't have to worry about collecting any Ric I can find, I can just go to a SoCal jam and play whatever I want! My hands shook as I picked up everything, and I always asked before I played it or simply held it because I hate it when local musicians I know pick up my stuff without asking (people here have heard it, I'd go out on the porch to light a buddy's cigarette and I'd come back to find people cranking my amp to insane levels and playing my guitars, and not even in the right way!)

Anyway, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm most likely going to be at SCARF, possibly with a keyboardist.

I don't know how Scott feels, but you won't see me using an Ampeg SVT, because I don't feel like carrying the monster around. My SWR can easily keep up with an SVT. As it is, I'm looking to get a newer, lighter bass rig.

How do you feel about the Ampeg B-15?

I usually just try to play numbers I've signed up for, or to fill in as needed or requested for missing parts on songs. I also like to exit the stage at the first opportunity; I learn a heck of a lot more watching other guys play than when I'm the one playing. I think most of my playing last time was to close out the show with the Rickenbrothers `10.

Glenn, though this is an unofficial sort of event. The So Cal regulars will be unofficially celebrating the 80th anniversary of RIC. You can bring your other brand instruments if you's like to display them, but due to the type of event on the stage, it really should be kept all Rickenbacker. I'll gladly let you play one of my Rick basses if you'd like to play bass.

I feel it's one of the all time great classic bass amps. Never owned one, but to play through one a few times. Great tone!
My SWR SM-400 (head only) has also become one of the all time great classic bass amps.

Not sure if we are going to do that this year. The reasons for the Excel spreadsheet were to help get people (especially the bassists) to play the songs they know and not be up there killing a song they don't know (that''s not fun! ), while there's another bassist in attendance who knows how to play it. The other reason was to try to make sure everyone got a chance to jam and that some people don't get way more stage time than others. It's seems like a good plan, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I wish it would work, but...
Any, we'll put some thought into if we'd like to do that again.
However we are going to figure out some kind of plan to make sure that everyone who would like to jam, gets their fair share of stage time. Don't forget the "sign", Dan! I'm gonna keep reminding you!

Yes, the stage time is really an issue to me. I'm lucky enough to have a gigging band and people to play with on a regular basis, but I know that is not the case for most, for whatever reason. What I really want to see are the folks who don't have an opportunity to play with other folks really get up there and know what it's like to play ith a band. I know so many are bedroom warriors and folks that don't get much of an opportunity to play, and that's who I want to see play, and share in that experience. Those of you who are shy, please get up there and give it a go, you are who we want participating. I would be happy to not play a note all night to know that someone who came a long way and rehearsed a number got to get up there and do it with the fellow forumites. I certainly don't want anybody going home feeling left out, or that there was no opportunity for them to play.
