Hiwatt Combo/Quarter Stack

Post by IHeartRics »

I finally got it put togther. I took an empty 1x12 Hiwatt combo cabinet and converted it to a closed back extension cabinet for my 1x12 Hiwatt combo. I could not locate the correct sheer grill cloth so I just went with something I liked (Marshall/Mesa style black cane weave). It has a Weber Thames in it. I love it. :D It gives the combo that added bottom end punch I couldn't get with the open-back combo. Now I can push a little more air at smaller venues without having to haul the 4x12!

Nice! But then again, I'm really biased
Webers are awesome, but those new Goerge Lynch Eminence speakers are supposed to be purple Fane Hiwatt clones, and for about the same cabbage. Interested to hear what the verdict is on those.
Rolled out my Hiwatt halfstack last week at rehearsal heard the chorus of "turn that down" hahah.

Actually I wanted a 50 or 75 watt Fane but they are sooo expensive, even when damaged (which after reconing isn't really the real deal anymore, is it?). So I figured I would try to get a Fane-like speaker. I was also watching and waiting for a George Lynch, a Reeves Purple, a Tayden, Hi-Tone (VHR), a Weber, etc. Ended up landing the Thames slightly used off ebay directly from Weber for half the price of new. So I became biased more towards my wallet! It sounds close to the 75 watter in the combo, but its tough to tell exactly as it's in a closed back cab.

Note that I used the original back panels but flipped then top to bottom with an additional piece in the middle, so its actually ported at the bottom. That way the original pieces stay un-cut with the cab. :D

Very cool chip. If you look hard, you can find old Laney Cabs with Fanes in them. I saw one at a Music go round a few years ago, and stupidly didn't jump on it for 200 bucks. Ther next day I went back and it was gone :(

Good to know about the Laney Cabs. I didn't know that.

Sorry about the missed opportunity. I hate when that happens. Many years ago I was at a flea market and had a chance to buy a Vox Berkeley - the tube version. It had the cab and carriage too. He wanted $250 cash for it. Had nothing on me and was closing time. Sent my in-laws back the next day and it was gone. :(

I really opened up the set up tonight and it ROCKS! It is so full, punchy, and aggressive with the extension cab. Lordy, lordy, my ears are ringing. And with the RAT it's just heaven! Think Pete Townshend meets Rick Nielsen. 8)

Just an update. I have yet to go back to my halfstack. Both my ears and back are pleased.
