Rickenbacker 4005WB how many were made ?

Hi
Is there a way to know how many 4005WB basses were made ?
I remember seeing not long ago a production chart from 1965 to 1970 I think.
But I can't find it anymore on the web!

Any suggestions or knowledge that you can share will be appreciated !

Well, not probably a guarded secret as such, more like production numbers not available. With the exception of the stated certified limited edition runs, RIC has not revealed production numbers on its musical instruments. There is no way to tell how many 4005WBs were made. They are rarer than the standard "round top" 4005, certainly, and the 4005 of any variety is rare enough. I would NOT trust any seller's statement such as "one of only XX made!" He doesn't know any more than the rest of us know, believe me.

I was going to mention the Smith book, but those numbers are so laughably low that you just know they are only a small part of the whole.

As others have stated, there is no way to know the total number made, previously listed totals published have been discredited as they were based on only half of the data in RIC's filing cabinets.....

Those of us who feed in "collected items" tend to be more accurate. lol

OS is a perfectly acceptable designation to use for the 1960s era instruments. Perhaps, not for those who are too anal to accept such a designation, however.

If I'm ever lucky enough to find one of these puppies, I'll enter it in the Register as WBBS, which IIRC was the official Rickenbacker nomenclature for such an instrument!

"OS" isn't appropriate for model 4005 instruments because there never was an "old style" of double-bound model 4005s, unlike the 330/360/370 series where the "old style" designation related back to the double-bound Capris of the '50s and early '60s.

I suppoese you are right, that does make perfect sense. I lump it in with the OS models as the body fits in with the OS bodies from the '60s. And, because OS could stand for Outstanding Superiority!

All jesting aside, although being anal can be fun in the right circumstances!

It is an issue when feeding data into the register. So we need to strive for consistency.

It would not be a problem if the search query was "show all double bound 4005 basses"...

The other one that drives me nuts is BT = Black Trim.. (A 70's era White 4001 is typically black trim in that the Plastic TRC, Pickguard and the binding is black. The rest of the parts, tuners, Bridge are all chrome, just like any other 70s 4001).


Then in 1986 or so JH introduces the Red, Midnight Blue, Silver and White finishes that come with BT BH. Pick up covers, tuners, R tail etc all in Black. MG was BT BH by default for about 8 years or so.

Again they get fed in pretty interchangeably.

And don't get me started about the new W series, Walnut(glo) and Autumnglo (satin) finishes!

Ah well.
