Paul McCartney's basses and guitars - the TV interview

Post by ilan »

This interview was done on Sept. 25, in Tel Aviv, Israel, shortly before sound check.

Keith Smith, Paul McCartney's technical manager, talks (while setting up the '63 Hofner) about the Hofner, the Epi Texan, the Les Pauls, the ukulele, and the Ric. It's almost 9:00 minutes long.

In the opening sentences I am saying something like, there are tons of equipment here, but we are more interested in the basses and guitars, blah blah blah, and then the interview itself is in English (with Hebrew subtitles... in a few days they will upload a version without subtitles).

The following link will open Windows Media Player.

Wow, great interview! Thanks for that, Ilan.
It must have been really exciting to be around so many pieces of music history. I wonder if that guy in San Francisco still has the lefty Les Paul he wanted to sell to Macca back then. It's probably worth a fortune now.

BTW...Did you happen to ask him after the interview was over what brand of "long, shiny ones" he strings Paul's bass with?

No I didn't, Daniel... I assumed he has always used Pyramids, but now I understand it's an unanswered question... sorry. Maybe next time :)

Important note: The link will open a new window. Place the cursor over the address line and hit the ENTER key. This should open the video in the MS Media Player.

Great interview, Ilan! I did get it to work fine on Safari, Kira. Highlight the address bar and hit return; you might have to do this a couple times. It takes a short while before the vid screen shows up in the window, and takes a while to load.

That other Hofner on the stand... looks like a Cavern bass, it has the pickups close together!

I hope they (@ work) will upload it to youtube soon, but I'm afraid this won't happen before Thursday, since the Jewish Yom Kippur is on Tuesday-Wednesday. I'm sorry for the inconvenience...

Here's how to get it to work, if it doesn't work automatically.

1. Click on the Link, it should bring you to a blank page, looks like an error.

2. Highlight the URL in the search box, and click enter.

3. Enjoy Ilan's accent. :D
