OK, I did mean front to back, so your response suggests that there is a correct way and an incorrect way to insert the rods with respect to the fingerboard and the rod channel (forget the headstock vs. the body end; I've got that one). How are they inserted? What features of the rods face the fingerboard and what features set down in the channel? THis way, I'll know if when I removem them whether they go back in the same way or the opposite way?
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

Oh, the arc should be high in the center, not low (frowning instead of smiling). And, in the case of the old style folded rods, the threaded longer ends go on the bottom.

Ah, thanks Paul. Mine's a 2008. But the frown image works; and this would be why fingerboards on the 4001 sometimes sustained damge when adjusted inproperly. The arc pushed up on the fingerboard. Makes sense to me.

I have heard it's a good idea to clamp the finger board to the neck during the operation... any merit to this?

Yes, especially if in some cases with 4001 truss rods you have to pry up on the nuts to straighten out the end of the rods.
