Newly aquired '78 4001 needs Schaller strap buttons...

Post by iamthecosmos »

Just picked this up after waiting an age for the cheque to clear.

Image

The thing is I intend to gig with it, so I need to fit Schaller strap buttons. Can anyone give me any advice on this? I've ordered these, are they right for the typical Schaller strap locks?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RICKENBACKER- ... 600wt_1141

These are the strap locks:

Do the buttons pop out easy enough, or will I need to score around them in case I crack the finish? I don't want to damage this bass, it's in great condition!

My 80' 480 has essentialy the same body shape (so presumeably the same strap pegs) and those are the ones I used. The stock pegs came out easy and the schallers work well.

Thanks for the help people, glad it's a straightforward and reversible process. I really wasn't keen on any woodwork!

That is one great looking bass. The schallers should be fine.

Make sure you screw them in tight, though. I had mine too loose and the one on the bottom pulled out. I think it was Jeff who told me how to get it back in (fill the hole with sawdust and wood glue, screw in the post, and let it dry) and it hasn't come out since.

Okay, strap buttons have arrived and been installed. Took a bit of effort to unscrew the old ones but it's ready to gig with now. :D

You should also consider doing what Dane did on my customised laredo. He put a small black felt washer between the body and the post. No marring the finish, and it looks really elegant, too!
Beautiful bass, btw, and another Big Star fan here.....

One can also use a #10 nylon washer, available in the U.S. at any Ace Hardware store.
