+1. Works very well with uprights too, and easier on the back than my old AC50.jps wrote:Consider an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500. Mine makes my Ricks, and other basses sound glorious.

This is a monster's setup. Any audio you can share, to please my ears?rickenbastard wrote:I got a new head. Custom Matamp GT-150. This thing is amazing. Had them tweak the mids on it to dial in vintage Marshall like Lemmy. Sounds like a mix of Sleep and Motorhead tones. It's perfect.

Did you ever try the AC50 for upright? Some good sounds in there!antipodean wrote:jps wrote:...easier on the back than my old AC50.

I will have to give it a try. I guess if I'm going to break my back with the upright, the AC50 won't do much more damage!Kiddwad57 wrote:Did you ever try the AC50 for upright? Some good sounds in there!antipodean wrote:jps wrote:...easier on the back than my old AC50.
My general feel is that the AC50 has a particular signature sound, whilst the Aguilar has a vast range which includes the ability to be transparent - a big advantage for swing, which is my main gig and the reason for taking up the upright. On the other hand, I have just been given a chance to do some more roots based music with another act - blues and alt-folk/alt-country, and that warm Vox sound may be just the ticket....

Absolutely the modern amp will be more versatile, etc., and to be honest I haven't gigged with my AC50 in years. But still, it did sound good with the string bass. Ages ago I had the opportunity to play a Paul Winter Consort gig and you wouldn't have believed the artistic director's expression when I came into the rehearsal with a Vox amp! Anyway, I used to strap the brilliant and normal channels together, using the volume knobs like active tone controls.

Don't count the Tone Hammer 500 out for that kind of music.antipodean wrote:...My general feel is that the AC50 has a particular signature sound, whilst the Aguilar has a vast range which includes the ability to be transparent - a big advantage for swing, which is my main gig and the reason for taking up the upright. +1!rickenbastard wrote:Rickenbacker bass + 15" speakers is magic.byoung wrote:I'm using an Orange OB1-300 with a single 15 cabinet usually with a tech 21 VT bass di, sounds fantastic in my opinion.
I'm using an Ampeg B-15R with an EV-15B, which is a huge improvement over the factory mud speaker.

What was the expression? Was he thrilled? Shocked? Appalled?Kiddwad57 wrote:Absolutely the modern amp will be more versatile, etc., and to be honest I haven't gigged with my AC50 in years. Re: What kind of bass amp do you use with your Rickenbacker?
More like disbelief. All was fine when the music started. I used the Vox at the rehearsal because it was lighter than the SVT head and Energy 1x15 used for the actual performance. But you can forget all that and bring on the 600 watt micro heads!

If I ever start gigging again, I may go this route.
