Book milepost

I've just completed the manuscript and am about to send it off to the publisher for their "copy edit." I'm hoping that their "copy edit" is what I think it is: examination for style, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and making sure I'm not libeling someone. I shur howp I kin rite gud enuf 4 thm.

I had to make a difficult decision to jettison the proposed "anatomy" series that Ted Staberow so wonderfully wrote on the Forum a few years back and generously donated to the cause. There was so much (too much?) information there that I couldn't fit in or affordably support with photos and graphics. I felt that the book was just not the place for it, but will provide links in the book so readers can access the articles on-line on the Forum.

I've had one refresher session with my trainer on the InDesign program and have already begun reconstructing chapters to prepare the book for publication. I've got another session Monday to go over some layout tools. For those who saw my early book proofs, the finished book will look similar to that, only better. With the professional InDesign program, I can utilize more advanced design elements such as spreading an illustration across the gutter to make a spread and other goodies yet to be explored.

I'm a couple of weeks behind where I want to be, but once I get rolling, I should make the deadline (1 December) with time to spare. I hope to have a finished book proof in October to possibly have John Hall do a fact check and to have the publisher (Hal Leonard/Backbeat Books) check that I've assembled it properly to go to press. Exciting times!

Shari was asking about the book progress at dinner tonight!

Perhaps the anatomy stuff can be made into it's own smaller book[let]?

Paul: I'm very much looking forward to seeing the book (despite your relegation of FLs to standard models!). I think you should defer to your own editorial skills and not apologize to anyone in consideration of the massive effort this must have been.

Thanks, John. Yeah, on the fretless thing: Fretless basses are well represented in the book, but I didn't feel that they should have their own chapter(s). RIC has listed FL as a separate model, first as the 4001FL and now the 4003FL. But they also made fretless versions (not many, granted) of the 4000, 4002, and 3000 which were never listed. So I treat FL as an option and put photos of them in their "parent" model's chapters.

Jeff, Ted's anatomy series could be made into a booklet if he were willing to find the time to take higher resolution photos of each item and go to the trouble of designing the book and having it (self) published. I'll leave that to him. But realistically, it's perfect where it is – here on the forum where the information is easily accessible, the photos look fine, and there's no additional work and expense needed.

Just a caveat: based on in my experience with published (or broadscast, for that matter) materials, I would not think of the text as being corrected for spelling, grammar, and syntax errors. IMO "editor" is nowadays really an honorific title and doesn't denote an actual deep knowledge of the use of the language. (I will refrain from launching into a tirade about the degradation of the language perpetrated by the media ... .)

Understood, Gary. As a retired career editor I can relate. But I can edit the hell out of a piece, send it to another qualified editor and he/she could still find more errors or better ways to express thoughts. Since I am the author and am going to be responsible for placing the text on the page, I am counting on being the one with the final say on all "corrections."

Well, for me, anyway. I get the book to them by 1 December, but then they have to print, publish, and distribute. It'll likely be out "there" in spring 2013. :D
