Hipshot Ultralights tuner wing/neck joint install question

Post by lumgimfong »

If the mounting screw screws position falls right on the line where the wing is glued onto the center neck wood, will it be ok to put the screw here into the seam after pilot hole drilled, or will it be bad for the joinery?
Don't want the wing separating from the neck over time.

Anyone installed ultralights on their Ric bass before?

Michael, if you use the correct size pilot bit it won't be a problem...

My experience with UptraLights (my fave tuners) is that the bushing is too short to catch the threads on the tuner body due to the thickness of the headstock. Email Bill at Hipshot customer service and request longer bushings if this is the case.

No worries about mounting Ultralites. Do as you plan to, and yes, order longer bushings from Hipshot, as I did. You will have to slightly ream out the post holes for the Ultralites, again, a simple procedure. 8)

Reaming tool (make sure you get the correct size):

Yep. Forgot about the tuner holes in the headstock needing to be enlarged to 9/16" via a proper reaming tool. Make sure you purchase the tuners with the 3/8" post size, or you'll need the tool in Jeff's previous post to enlarge the holes...

Ream if.

Yes. If you really want the larger post version I have a set you can buy; they were on my 4005WB. I have both the cloverleaf and Y keys with them (you can go modern or vintage, easily, and even change them out to suit the gig!

Either size UltraLights will require reaming. The larger 1/2" post size may interfere with the truss rod cover.
