I think that '70 was the primary year for the 21r's.
That was my recollection, from the discussions on this board from years ago. I had a Feb '71 Sergio Silva had a '70, and a couple of others had '70 models...

Do a Google search for 1970 models.

This one was kind of interesting; it made me think of that Robert Palmer video.

I had two 21 fretters from '71. A Jan and a Feb, which was Gene's. Also had a March '71 that was 20 frets.

Gene, do you know that's your old one in Paul's book?

I would think the subject '71 whould have had flat grovers and walnut wings under that pesky blue finish.

At second glance, maybe it does have flat grovers on now.

JFinelli81 wrote:Hello. I just bought my own Rick Guitar after about 28 years of wanting my own Rick. When I was very young (mid to late 80's) my StepDad showed me his 4003 bass that he's had since nearly brand new. I never saw anything like it. I was blown away and never forgot about it. Well, after I got my own Rick some 25 years later he broke his out and sent me a picture of it. I thought I would share here. It reminded me very quickly of why I never forgot about that bass and grew up to buy my own Ric (330 Fireglow). He had many Fender basses, A Steinberger, Early Music Man etc... but this one was much different.

...and that right there is my dream Ric; Azure, pre-skunk stripe, my favourite period ('70-'72). I've been looking for one of those forever (well, for 25 years or so!). Beautiful bass!

I have an Aug '72 Azure (with hidden skunk stripe). I'd post pictures but my Photobucket account seems to want me to upgrade at cost (I haven't used it in ages). Time to find another image hosting site, methinks. Any suggestions?

FWIW I'd sooner have that than a 21 fretter anyday, based on the one I owned.

You can upload images directly to the forum site using the Upload attachment button below the dialog box. Easy to do. You may have to resize the file (1280 x 1280 pixels, and 500kB maximum).

Cheers Jeff. I always ended up with tiny pictures whenever I used the upload attachment thing, plus having to resize, hence why I always used Photobucket.

Yup-
Of the 16 TRUE 21r's on the register (21 are listed but 5 of those are either modded or entered incorrectly)10 are from '70, 2 from '69 and 4 from '71.

While not every 21r is in the register, it does gave a good idea of when the bulk of them were produced.
