Impedance of bass volume control on 79 4001?

Post by rictified »

How are you all doing? My 1979 4001's bass volume control is getting staticky when turned near max and intermittent on full. What is the impedance of this volume control, 330K or 500K? I've seen both figures and want to get the correct one, it sounds great with the impedance that's in there now so don't want to change it. Does Rick still sell this part, if not does anyone know the manufacturer? Did Rickenbacker stop selling parts or am I that computer illiterate?

That would be resistance.

No worries, Bob. 8)

I'm sure you've seen some of the gems on Talkbass. Like ohmage, for one example.

The pots originally used were 250K CTS dish backed pots with a 250K rating. They also had a 1/4" tall bushing, and are sold shaft. These exact pots are difficult to source, but I stock them. PM me if you're interested.

Impedance is also correct. It's just that there is no reactive component to it! :P

Thanks Dane I wish I had known, I already ordered some from Rickysounds out of England, supposed to be like the originals, I guess we'll see.

I thought that was the definition from my long ago electronics past.

It is. There's resistance (resistors), reactance (capacitors and inductors), and impedance, the vector sum of resistance and reactance. So, if the reactance is zero, then the impedance is equal to the resistance. Similarly, if there is no resistance (theoretically possible, but not in practice) then the impedance is equal to the reactance. But seriously, I agree with you. Impedance isn't technically incorrect, but resistance is more direct, more accurate, and less likely to confuse anyone.
