Wiring with custom pickups?

Post by 40001967 »

Hello! I'm new to the forum, so please excuse me if there's a pre-existing thread on this subject.

Anyways, let's get started.

I recently bought a Rickenbacker 4001 body and neck from a friend (unsure of the year, my friend tells me it's a '79). The only hitch being it has no electronics. I understand the wiring diagram for stock pickups (of which I only have the 'bridge' from a modern one), but I have a wiring kit from 920d (for seymour duncan r-pickup humbuckers). I'd like to wire it up with the stock pickup in the bridge and a Bartolini 6RT, and the question being, do I need to a) follow the stock diagram, with the original harness b) can I use the 920d harness and use the same two pickups or c) do I need to get custom wiring?

If no is the answer to any of these, I might as well just buy a regular R neck pickup, right?

Have patience, I'm new, but if you have any wiring diagrams, please share them!

Cheers from Canada,
Cat

The harnesses that 920D makes do not follow the Rickenbacker schematic AT ALL. They use a Gibson style schematic. They also don't do the Rick-O-Sound output jacks properly. Perhaps this is why they charge less than I do on Ebay.....

I don't actually advertise on Ebay, but if you spend any time looking through Rickenbacker related things, my harnesses come up. Here's one....https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rickenbacker-4 ... SwhlZZvus1

hm.... would you say I could wire a bartolini to those 'original' syle harnesses, or would I be better off just using a regular 'hi-gain' pickup?

As the Bartolini 6RT is designed to replace the neck Hi-gain, it can be wired the same. I like the Bartolini but some people feel they sound sterile. I personally like the Joe Barden better. It sounds like a hi-fi, hi-gain, without the 60 cycle hum.

And why is the OP not considering current RIC pickups?

Stephane......you need 4-40 screws that are longer than stock. I'll include a pair with your harness.

Probably because, he already has the parts he plans to install in the bass?
