Treble Pickup Ring Question

Hello, I searched the forum and beyond for an answer, but can’t find anything.
In what year was the “flush edge” of the treble pickup ring discontinued and replaced with the stepped edge?
A picture of a modern pickup ring is shown. Does anyone know when this was introduced?

Are you talking about the center part of the surround that is cut down like an eighth of a inch or so?

If so, I think they were always like that.

I think the 'scoop" on standard 4001' - 4003 bridge pickup surrounds went away in the early 70's and came back in the mid - late 80's.

Ok, I stand corrected. Just doing a random search of images, it looks like '73 was a transition for this feature as well. I see them in '73, but not in '74.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Much appreciated.
I see it on some high-gain bridge pickups in the late '60s and early '70s.

Understand that the treble pickup bezel is easily removed and replaced, so it will be difficult to set a time period for a certain style. Same goes for most of the hardware unless you have documentation that a bass has never received replacement parts. Even at the time of the build, there may have been several different variations of hardware available to the assembler.

The Black Trim flush-edge surrounds show up as late as 1986. Some Shadows had flush surrounds, others had the scooped type.

Still looking for a scooped BT surround, if anyone has one they are willing to part with. Doesn't have to be mint.
