D'Addario XL Half-Round strings?

Post by Guzzitd63 »

Hello Ric Fans ... and Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I'm curious if any have experience with D'Addario's Half-round strings.
Or any other "ground wound" strings for that matter.

My experience is that that offer a bright(er) sound than flats without the fretting noise of rounds.
I tried my first set in 1979 or so.
I think they were a new creation then and I've rediscovered them recently.
Opinions?

Thanks in advance. David.

I had them on my RIC 2030 for a while and thought they had pretty nice tone. You can hear a sample of it here:

I used the original nickel Half Rounds throughout the late '70s on my 4001 I had back then. In more cent years I used them on my two fretless Zons.

Give them a try; regardless of what we may say you really need to try out strings to find out how thy work for yourself.

I too used half rounds in the late 70’s on my 4001. These strings always draw mixed reactions but I really like them. I’ve come back to them recently on my current 4003s and love the tone.
I use the Dadarrios because I believe they are pure nickel and the GHS are a nickel iron alloy. The D’Addarios seem to have a warmer tone due to the nickel.
Happy Thanksgiving!

IIRC, the ones I used in more recent times were stainless steel.

Oh thanks for the reply's!
This is the kinda information I was hoping to receive.

I'm inferring from the D'Addario website that their strings are Nickel wrapped.
I had no idea GHS made some as well.

I bought a set of Medium length ... oops.
The E string is too short.
I'm gunna put them on my Starfire (reissue)
