Does the short scale Ric bass sound like a 4000 series?

Post by lumgimfong »

Only few can answer this thread, I imagine, since they are rare.

But wondering if sounds like a 4000 series before going hunting for one.

Wish they would come out with a shortie these days.

They do not sound alike, they are HEAVY, and as a "collectors item" they cost more than a new 4003S. They do sound good, but not THAT good.

I had a 3000. It was a fun little bass, but as mentioned by Dane, weighed a ton, and the neck joint on mine was pretty ugly. It sounded good most of the time, it had a pretty microphonic pickup in a BIG pickup hole so if you accidentally tapped the guard in the wrong spot you'd get a lot of handling noise, but generally I would say it was more precision-y in tone than a 4001/3. I only got rid of it to trade towards my first 4001.

If you enjoy a challenging hunt, I think there are three 4001 short scales from the early 70's, and four of the recent 4030's.

Do you mean the 3000? I had a '76 short scale 3000 in the 90's that definitely had the Rick growl, not as trebly as the bridge pickup on a 4001, and a little more trebly than a 4001 with both pickups selected. Problem was I could only really get that one tone out of it so wasn't very useful as a stage bass in my classic rock gigs where you need a range of tones (which the 4001 does perfectly).

@RobW:
Either model. Though the one that looks like a 4001 would be better. But from what I am told it is almost impossible to find.
