Fingerboard radius for 1972 4001

Hi, everyone Anyone know what the typical fingerboard radius is for a '72 4001? Would I be correct in saying 10"? I have 2 x '72s (which both feel the same) but no radius gauges...

As far as I know, all the 4001's, and all current production 4003, are 10" radius boards.

Thanks for the response. I've actually ordered a set of radius gauges, which I'm sure will come in handy anyway.

FWIW, I'd have said my old 21 fretter definitely had more camber to the board than my '72s, and my '91 CS definitely felt quite a bit flatter.

The fingerboard radius on my 1981 4002 was 7 1/2. When I wore out the frets, I talked to my luthier, and we agreed the neck was thick enough and the slab ebony fingerboard was thick enough we could recontour it to 10 inch radius, which we did. It is now much more comfortable and consistent, both in feel and tone across the strings and up the neck.

I've owned several '72 basses... they're 7.25". Same as the 60's basses.

Aha, thanks for that. Have just received my radius gauges; I wonder if there's a 7.25 in there? I'm intrigued to know whether mine fit the 7.25 mold.
