Having noticed a random wire sprouting from inside the jack plate wiring (the neck pup cut-out, so I investigated under the scratch plate) I wrongly assumed that it had detached from some solder spotting the copper tape east of the treble volume pot. My soldering made things worse (the bridge pup also cut-out) so I removed my attempts and continued my investigations armed with the schematics to navigate.
But then to my horror, this dropped out....
the random wire had broken free; a short length of wire with two ends at each end.; four connections.
Four connections to what?
I've spent a couple of days trying to figure out various wiring diagrams but just can't work out from where it has broken free.
The neck pup still doesn't work, the bridge pup does.
Is there a photo 'help' diagram of how the two jacks should be soldered?
I can't get head around the technical illustrations.
...and then this happend!

Looks like your wiring harness had been modded; that is not stock RIC wiring, none that I have ever seen, anyway.
Re: ...and then this happend!
A picture of the wiring harness and pickups would be informative.

Panic over..
All fixed with the help of a Rick friendly tech.
Yes, it had been rewired somewhere down the line.
Two points re-soldered correctly to stereo jack, other two to the treb volume.

It would also help if you told us the model and year of the bass in question.
