Who made the funky case? My 78' had the standard rectangular hard case, never saw one like that offered stock. Was there an aftermarket company making fitted cases for Rics?

Not sure "who" made those cases, but they seem to have been made for the Rick clones of the era, the "lawsuit" basses. They were not (as far as I can tell) ever supplied by Rickenbacker.

A friend of mine had a Univox Rick copy with a case like that.
That being said, I think the bass is real.
