Size of slotted screws for Rick knobs?

Post by Stablemate »

Somehow lost one of the slotted screws in my '75 Rick 4001 volume knob - anyone know the size so I can get another? Hoping they sell packs at Home Depot or something. Thanks!

Are you talking about the set screw that holds the knob in place? Just take one out of another knob and go down to you local hardware store, where they can match it. Maybe buy a few, to keep some spares on hand.

Yes, the knob set screws. Would be nice if Rickenbacker would publish what size they use, but yeah, I'll do what you suggested. Thanks!

RIC doesn't make the screws or the knobs, they buy them from their supplier. It probably is not important to them what the specs are on those set screws.

Hey, I'm a little late on this.
My apologies.

The thread size in question is #8-32 x approx .210"
#8 machine threads are a common size available in any hardware store (even the fine 32 threads per inch *tpi*)
.210 inches may be called 1/4" length.
Slotted set screws may be difficult to find.
If you're handy with a dremel tool and cut-off wheel you could make your own out of any #8-32 machine screw.
Alternatively ... you could use a socket-head set screw (uses and "allen wrench")

I hope this helps.
Party on!

*edit* I feel like I would be remiss if I didn't mention McMaster-Carr as a possible source.
These little set screws have some extra features if you're looking for an exact match.
Namely, the "cup-point" at the end opposite the slot side.
They're made to dig-in a little to the shaft.

Oh hell.
I just took a little time to look them up.

McMaster-Carr - https://www.mcmaster.com/94025A135

A package of 50 are $8.28.
You'll have plenty to share with your friends and loved ones.
Oh! And these are stainless (and presumably beer/bong-water resistant.)

Alternatively, here's 10 in 316 alloy for $4.59:

Either way, they're coarse thread ... I mistakenly referred to them as fine thread.
... my bad.
