Will the new Shaller S locks fit stock 4003 buttons?

Post by lumgimfong »

Want to try the new Schaller S Locks.
Do they fit the stock 4003 strap lok buttons, or will I have to use the ones that come with the S locks. The buttons look the same from the pics I have seen.

A definite YES..

I had to buy new strap locks as my older ones disintegrated from use and age.
I bought the newer Schaller S ones... They work perfectly!!!

Recognizing these posts are 3-4 + Years ago, I researched this with Schaller. They told me why should they be the ones to tell me if their product works on someone else's build, (Rickenbacker's strap posts), then I found in the ad the model number of the S post. They now make 3 different sizes. I used the medium in a black chrome since my 4003 is in Black Jet Glo. Bought it in 2023 new but I think the serial number says it was built I. 2022. If I am wrong, I will check the box and update my post tomorrow.

Schaller locks will fit Ricks unless they're co-branded with Fender. The Fender Schaller buttons are a different size.

For many years, I've used the Schaller strap locks that have been available, Though had been interested in the S locks. I'm always looking for ways to save time and make things easier when getting on and off a stage at gigs. so recently changed how I secure my straps for gigs. You can't keep a strap attached to a guitar with a bulky strap locks on a guitar and I wouldn't advise doing so in a gig bag either.

I bring a Rickenbacker 4001 and a Jazz Bass to current gigs.

I use these rubber strap holders on my Jazz Bass:

I use these with a Rickenbacker 4001 as the rubber ones are thicker and don't fit as well as these on the Schaller style strap buttons:
D'Addario Strap Locks.jpg

Advantages:
You don't have to open the button holes more to make the strap locks fit.
You can put the guitar in its case or gig bag with the strap still attached.
Since I don't have to attach and remove the straps, it's a time saver when setting up and breaking down at gigs, especially at gigs with multiple bands.
They don't don't cost much. You can even get the rubber type in hardware stores or from the stoppers of Grolsch beer bottles.

Neither of these cheap strap locks has failed me. Several of my other musician friends have changed to using them.
The JETGLO finish name should be officially changed to JETGLO ROCKS! :-)

The ones you use on the Jazz Bass remind me of Figure-8 Top Fasteners. The first time I encountered those type of washers was when we got the 1912 Gus Stickley 819 sideboard in 2016.

They are somewhat visible under the top near the front in this photo.

Yes it is! Thart was our first Stickley piece of furniture; it was kind of a lucky find, actually.

I've been dealing with this issue in the last few days. The Schaller website and many online folks proclaim that the new Schaller strap locks are totally backward compatible.

I beg to differ. The strap locks ARE. They'll work on your older Schaller posts. But that's not true in reverse. The older strap locks DO NOT fit on the new posts.

A little annoying but no big deal. But while Googling the whole issue I found some advice from old geezers about putting some candle wax on the posts. I'm gonna do that!
