1969 4001 Missing Link or Not Original

Post by teeder »

I'm not sure if anyone caught this bass on ebay a few days ago.

http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... 6order%3D5

It's got some very strange features for a '69.
The older style tuners, horseshoe pu and a surround with a slight tail to it.

I believe at one point it was owned by a member here.

What say you?

The bridge pickup bezel is from a lapsteel, and it looks like a refin to me. I'd like to see under the guard and truss rod cover.

Kevin,

It's a Dale re-fin with a Lollar HS pu. Once owned by John "chef of the future" Fay.

Lots of info missing in the description. I think the buyer got tooked.

I'm pretty bummed about this one, though as I said, I knew it was too good to be true.
I was in talks with the seller and basically had it on hold until I could get more information.
Does anyone know what pictures if any were in the register before they ebay pictures were put in there?
That's one of the places I went for info, but it had been updated with the new pictures and no mention of it being refinished.

This is one of the major flaws with the register, when a person decides to register a COLLECTED item. They potentially provide/infect the register with problem childs such as this bass in question.

Point taken but only if the collector decides to change the photos from the previous ones, Jeffrey. :) There is no way to know for sure what changes have been made to an instrument after it leaves the Factory.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

It was originally registered in 2009.
I wonder if there were pictures from before it was refinished and if those were deleted when the new pictures were loaded?

I updated the Register on this 4001 after seeing the ebay ad with the serial number. There were no photos of the bass in the Register entry.

After I updated it, I had a suspicion as to who the prior owner was, and contacted him. He told me that the bass had been refinished and other mods made.

I have added this additional information to the entry for this bass on the Register.

It will be interesting to see how it's described if it's re-listed.
The seller claimed he was selling on consignment and that when he told the owner it had been refinished and parts changed out, he was devastated.

It was a JG re-fin. And a poor one at that.
Good Guys had it and I bought it from them in 2006.
There is a picture of Mike Lull's basses and this one is in it. I don't know when it was taken.
I still have the pick guard that came on it. I also have the boogered bobbin that was in the HS.

Dale did a great job on the refin.

It's back and with no mention of the changed parts and re-fin.
