Chris Squires RM DC172

Post by pag »

I posted a link on the resource Facebook page from Brindleys Music Center in Arizona.
It appears they were asked to look at a few of Chris Squires basses (for a bit of tlc presumably) by his family.
Heres the link to facebook and some good shots of DC172.

Check out the later bridge and saddles installed on the old tailpiece and the reissue HS bobbin under the old shoes.
Most of the original round head slotted screws seem to be long gone the nylon nut looks new and the finish dates from the 90s I think.

Also, look at the wear mark from the heel of his hand on the Horseshoe, years of pivoting have worn through the Chrome.

I'm frankly surprised that it wasn't scooped up by Vincent Gallo. I hope Scottie is getting appraisals to value its worth as a donation to a museum.

Looks like the original (or equivalent) bobbin. It has pan head screws, not big alnico magnets protruding.

Not the original bobbin.

The original bobbin would be the raised edge type with fillister screw heads.

Perhaps it is not, but it doesn't appear to be a RI HS PU bobbin?

Here is a similar image of my old July '73 4001 with a RIHS PU.

Were the RI HS PU bobbins ever made with rounded/smoothed edges and have black painted magnets?

It looks pretty similar to the re-issue bobbin, but I don't think it is.

The slugs do look solid...but I never saw them painted. I don't know why someone would paint them...???

My guess is it's not a Ric pu.

You do realize, this may cause major consternation among the Chris Squire tone fans?

Are they painted or just corroded?

It could be my eyes, but I don't see the cut-outs on the ends of the surround. Reissue?

You'll likely solve the Kennedy Assassination before uncovering the actual correct history of this bass...
