Huh!? I wonder if Paul was at all influenced by some of these other Ric bass players...to finally take the Ric plunge?
He passed on the 4001S in '64. What made him change his mind? Interesting.

Tony, wasn't that first one a right-handed 4001S? The second was a lefty and the price was right.

The price was right on both. The first one was indeed a righty, though.

Just a theory - having played a Rick for most of my bass-playing life, I can see how the feel and tonal quality of the 4001/4003/1999 can lend one towards playing fast lines and chordal passages much like Chris created with his. I think there are parts that just wouldn't have come about if Chris hadn't chosen the RM. On a related parallel, since Geddy Lee quit using a Rick, I haven't found his basslines to be nearly as interesting as what he came up with his 4001. Kudos to Squire for keeping his signature instrument & creative tool in his vocabulary.

Now then - stepping backwards to that ambiguous exchange between Ronbo, Boyle, and Cabibe... what are we missing? Something abysmal about Lake and his RM?

Sorry for the mysterious posting. I was quite worried that the famous RM may have been badly damaged in the stage incident. We'll have to wait and see if it appears at the next show, once they get things back on course.

Does anyone know what the original finish was on "the RM1999 (DC127). Did it come with a cream-colored finish, or did Chris' repairman put that on it?

FireGlo. Someone posted very early pics of it onstage, but I can't find them now.
