Sorry guys but again this does not fit criteria this song was not a hit according to my sources of reference.

Your correct; Neil Young's version of "Southern Man" was not a hit single, but at least here in the US it got a lot of FM radio airplay and was very well known.
Officially, this was released as a Dave Clark Five single (the next to last one). It is in fact Dave Clark & Friends, essentially DC and Mike Smith with session men supporting. Eric Ford plays lead on the record. The story I've heard is that Mike really pushed to do this (Normally DC had total control over song selection) thinking it could change their image and get them back on the charts. Didn't work, but still neat to hear them sound this heavy.
