I like that a lot - don't remember hearing it before (any version). When does it date from Roy? sounds late 60s/early 70s to me, but I have been known to be wrong :)

Released in UK in January 67 Nick, I'll send you the Searchers original version

Interesting to compare the two versions. I assume the alternate one you started this thread with is a "Live at the BBC" session? Much less smooth and "produced", but it certainly has its own appeal... I'm trying to figure out (without success) quite what it is that gives it that "late 60s" sound - makes me think of songs like "In The Year 2525" or "Green Tambourine", without actually sounding at all like either of them...
By the way, since I'm not a Searchers expert (although a great lover of their early records) who is it singing the lead right at the start of the song? I'm fairly sure it's not Mike Pender, but really don't know the other guy's voices that well.
Anyway, many thanks once again for introducing me to this song - it's been going through my head all weekend!
