The Thing about Hank

Post by hamilton_square »

IN THIS RECENT BBC RADIO BROADCAST Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler and Phil Manzanera pay tribute to Hank Marvin. As well as hearing from the man himself, Cliff Richards has a few words to say also.

Four things I now know about Hank Marvin that I didn't know before ...

… the influence that fellow British guitarist Joe Brown had on Hank Marvin’s distinctive playing style.

… how in 1966, as a journeyman session player, Jimmy Page played the harmonica on Time Drags By – a Cliff Richards and the Shadows number that featured in the film Finders Keepers.

… Hank Marvin’s refusal in 2004 on religious grounds to accept the Order of the British Empire [OBE] from Queen Elizabeth II in her birthday honours list.

… how the Shadows got the idea of the choreographed “Shadows Walk” that was such a feature of their stage act after watching a group called The Treniers on the under-bill of a Jerry Lee Lewis concert.
