Need Help With An Arrangement
Need Help With An Arrangement
I'm working up a cover of Carl Perkins' Matchbox. I like Perkins' arrangement as show here:
but then there's these arrangements:
You'll notice the arrangements with Ringo & Eric along with Johnny & Eric have a third verse added to it.
Which version would you recommend?
BTW, I'm probably going to use my 1997 for this one, maybe the Strat.

Re: Need Help With An Arrangement
Hell, Richard, why not write a couple of more verses? This would get folks wondering, don'tcha think?
Back in the Surfbards' halcyon days (when we had audiences numbering in the tens!), we decided that "409" was too short, so I wrote two more verses. At that time, it was a well-known Top 40 song. Puzzlement all around when we lit up the tires on that one.

It's always nice to write two more verses to well-known songs. I'm actually thinking about modifying the Who's "Too Much of Anything" by writing an extra verse...
Use your 1997, Rich. Lennon used his 325 (for the lead!) on the Beatles version, with A LITTLE compression, you'd probably nail The Beatles' version easy.

Jake, there's one thing you should know about me. I very seldom ever want to "nail" anybody's version. One of my mottos is I Dare To Be Different.JakeK wrote:... you'd probably nail The Beatles' version easy.
That said, I like the idea of adding a verse or two. Now if I could just get the creative thoughts flowing.

Re: Need Help With An Arrangement
I always try to find a happy medium.
When I performed "The Last Time" by the Stones at a party, I used the Stones' tempo and rhythm for the song, but added the E to F# modulation that The Who did when they recorded it.

Richard: Perhaps this verse may appeal to you
Well, I heading for the tracks now, my matchbox in tow
Gonna find me a box-car, a place to change my clothes
Well I'm all dressed up now, just got no place to go

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Re: Need Help With An Arrangement
I often write new verses (or just completely redo the lyrics) for well known songs. I'm not creative enough to write my own from scratch. Of course they're usually something along the lines of what Weird Al Yankovic does...sloop_john_b wrote:It is?!JakeK wrote:It's always nice to write two more verses to well-known songs.
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Re: Need Help With An Arrangement
How about rewriting the music to go with existing lyrics like this:
The Lemon Antennas do this version.

My thought as well.
I can't see youtubes at work, so I can't comment on whatever those are, but yeah, I don't know.
Re: Need Help With An Arrangement
I perfer the first version from '56.
"The best things in life aren't things."
