All amateur comedians are advised to place their 'porking' jokes here.bartyclue wrote:I have nothing useful to add. I really wish I could sing but I cannot. I was once told about my singing skills, that I sound like pigs fornicating

The forests would be a very quite place if inhabited only by those birds who sang best. I love the Rolling Stones' sentiment it's the Singer not the Song.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Rickenbacker player since 1978
Re: Singing if you're not a singer
I'm not really trained to sing well. I'm sort of like Tom Petty or Bob Dylan, I just hop up to the microphone and help drive the song along with my voice. I've been noted on my "studio" recordings as being and I quote, "Afraid of the microphone". Of course, there are some the people who've been the SCARF meetings who can differ.
Re: Singing if you're not a singer
I only sing solo.....so low I can't be heard.

Re: Singing if you're not a singer
I sing backup in a band as well. I know if I'm nervous I can't sing as well. If I were to sing lead in front of people I don't think I could because of nerves. One thing I notice when I sing alone with my acoustic is that my voice cracks and I cough. Do you think this is because I'm not singing from the diaphram, or maybe my voice is weak. I speak quietly too and always thought I might need to exercise my voice to avoid that scratchy feeling in my throat that causes me to cough when I sing.

Yeah, you're straining. And you've diagnosed your situation pretty well. Singing well is really pretty athletic. You wouldn't run the Boston marathon having only jogged around the block once the day before the race.

I'll have to do some of those exercises when I'm driving alone or something.

So does the singer make the song or the song make the singer?

I know I always admire great songwriters more than great singers. I love guys that write great songs but technically don't sing well, like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, etc., etc. I almost always prefer their versions over any more slick cover versions. The Byrds do Bob Dylan in there own way, and I love there versions almost as equal to the originals though.
