How much is too much??
Re: How much is too much??
You have to EQ a Cii differently from a 4001/2/3 as Ciis are warmer/darker in tone, overall. I put scatterwound toasters in the the Cii I used to have, along with a VVT control harness. The Laredos are more aggressive sounding out of the box, more in keeping with a 4001/2/3 but with a lot more output and deadly quiet regarding hum and noise.

Jeff,
Understood on eq'ing it differently. Darker & warmer in tone, I agree 100%, I'd go as far as to say, much more bass heavy. Brian told me after I got the bass that I'll need to eq them vastly different in order to get the sound I was looking for. There in is the rub, out of the box a 4003 provides me with the sound I crave, with no mad scientist tweeking of the abundance of knobs and push buttons that damn GB head had. Half of which I had no clue as to what they did. Next rehearsal may be in a different room on a Hartke head so it's back to the drawing board on tweeking? No time for that. I was toying with purchasing an Orange TB500 but the cabs in the studio are rated for 350. Kinda playing Russian roulette with their 350 rated speaker and my 500 w head. Not that I plan on getting that loud! If I wanted to up the ante in the arms race, I could lug my 4x10 cab to the rehearsal and make everyone deaf, but I'd need a new back in short order since the studio is on the second floor, no elevator.

OK, I took the plunge and ordered a VVT harness for my 4004. I'll be going the dual coil tap route as well in an effort to keep this instrument as part of my herd. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.

You can certainly tame the beast, well in case case, uncage it. Looking forward to hearing the results of your work.

Jeff,
Most certainly! I'm definitely in favor of letting "the monster out of the box"!

That would by my work Jeff I'll be building the harness with a pair of 500K Alpha push-pull pots for the volume controls, a 500K CTS pot for the tone control, and a .022uF Ajax radial "Blue Cap". It should be back in Sepp's hands by the end of next week, after which I start on his next projectjps wrote: Looking forward to hearing the results of your work.

Re: How much is too much??
I think you're gonna like the options that the new harness will open up for you,Joseph! (I have pretty much the same thing on both my 4004's)
Since i run my Markbass amp controls totally flat, and use a tech 21 VT pedal to preamp, the only tonal tweaking i usually do is to turn the midrange control from about 9 oclock to completely off when going from my 4004's to my 4000. And i typically run all the tone pots fully open on all the basses for most songs.

The harness that Dane provides is first class all the way. Exceptionally neat work and it is a breeze to install.

Dane,
SWEET!! I'll wire her up right away and let you know how she does. I'll go over my notes from our past posts so I do it correctly. Fingers crossed, of course!
