Electro Double Neck Steel?

Post by lookingbackontomorrowmusi »

I recently inherited an electro double-neck steel very similar to the 52' DC-16. This one however only has 6 strings per neck and I was wondering if anyone knew the specific model number and what it might be worth. It's in excellent condition.

If it's exactly the same exactly the same except for
it being a double 6, it's a DC-12, made between 1950-53. The DC-12 is fairly rare in my experience, as most steel players prefer 7 or 8 strings/neck. From what I know most players don't think much of the double neck instruments from this era.
To collectors like myself they are intereting from a historical perspective.
To place a value on this steel detailed photos would be very helpful. I know of a DC-16 just like the one in this forum's photo gallery that sold recently for $800. Please post or send me photos.

Great coincidence.
A DC-12 just appeared on George Gruhn's site.

The $1800 price is probably about twice what it's worth, and I don't think it will go for anywhere near that much, but I have to say that because of Gruhn's reputation, he will get top dollar.
How much are you asking for the instrument?

Richard, would you care to give us your opinion of why these double bakelite neck guitars are not popular? DM.

David,
The instrument referred to above is one piece of cast aluminum. The fingerboards are made of lucite.
I think the reason these instruments aren't particularly popular with double neck players is that they don't have legs and are somewhat cumbersome on the lap. Just my opinion.
