This book is small, cheap and elegant. Just buy it and ask questions later.
It's called "Slide Rules" and was written by Andy Volk.

Looks very interesting. I'd really like to have a lap steel. Thanks for posting the link.

I should add that this book isn't just for steel guitar.
It also covers open tunings for bottleneck, and Indian slide guitar.
