San Diego Vintage Lap Steel Show

Post by elreydlp »

Saturday, May 22 in Oceanside, and it's FREE!

Interest level for a show that both displays these old instruments- and
that has professional players on hand for live performances- has been VERY HIGH!

This will be the 1st Annual San Diego Vintage LAP STEEL Guitar Show.
Celebrating vintage lap steel guitars of the 1920s thru 1960s.

This is a FREE Event to all buyers / sellers / display-only

Mr. Jim Palenscar- owner of 'Steel Guitars of North County' - has been kind enough
to lend us his facility for the first show! Plenty of free parking! His AWESOME shop
includes an elevated performance stage, a P.A. system, and closed-circuit Video
set-up so that the audience will get a birds-eye view as the pros give demonstrations!

Jim will have 50 old LAP STEELs and consoles on display alone. Other collector friends
are bringing their old LAPS out of the closets for this event- so I am expecting a minimum
of at least 100 or more instruments for everybody to see!

( Additionally- Jim has 70+ Pedal Steels in the other 1/2 of building!)

Thus far- scheduled for live performance are:

( Order to be determined- plus they are skilled teachers if you'd need lessons! )

Adrian Demain- rare old C. Kahlman double 6
Dan Yablanka- vintage Weissenborn collection
Jack Bulter- Old Oahu 6
Robb Lawrence- vintage Gibsons 7 strings-
Robin Henkle- Old Supro 6
. . . . .and more to come!

Directions- I-5 exit at Mission Avenue- go east
( away from the ocean ) to 3375 Mission suite D.

Ribbons will be awarded for:
1. The biggest collection displayed-
2. The rarest / and or coolest instrument of the day-
3. The most unusual instrument of the day-

Jim is exceedingly gifted at set-ups and repairs to these old Laps. He just completed
a complete tear-down, and full-chrome & polish treatment to my ratty old 1939 Rickenbacher
Model 59- and it looks like a million bucks now!

Dealers- bring as many LAPS to sell as you want- no cost to sell either!

The complete emphasis is on bringing YOUR LAP STEELS out to show people!

Please forward to other interested friends!

Thank you, Barney

Skip,
You're very welcome. It will be interesting to monitor that thread on the SGF for feedback. There are already two responses from easterners indicating they wished they lived on the west coast. If that show goes well, it might spark interest in other regions, as well.

Thanks Richard. Keep me posted.
Although I don't play one, my interest in Steels goes way back. My guitar teacher in the early 60's was primarily a steel teacher. In fact he played steel in the orchestra he lead. When I was in the Musical Instrument Biz (National Sales Manager-Pignose) I got to know the guys at Sierra Steel guitars and even sold one of their lap steels. I got to play with Buddy Emmons at their Summer NAMM booth in '99. That was the year that Steel Guitar was the featured instrument, and their was a big Steel concert at the Arena next to the Nashville Convention Center. That's where I first heard Joe Wright-I'm still shakin'.
My friend Barney who's putting on the show is a recent Steel fan-since he got the '39 Rick-and has gone head-over -heels.
Unfortunately I already had vacation plans for the day of the show. Barney tried some other dates, but nothing else worked, so i'll miss it. I think it's important, so I'm still helping him get it moving.
Thanks for your support. Hope you don't mind that I gave your email to Barn.
Where are you located?

I wish I was more into steel guitars, as it sounds like it will be a blast.

Gary-since you're so close, you definitely should go. You may be amazed at what you see.
Are you coming to the Min-Con on 5/8. I'm really looking forward to meeting some of the great guys on this forum.

In my entire life of over 64 years I have never met a serious guitar player, who couldn't at least get into the the open chord thing. It just falls off from there. You should go. At the least for the historical perspective, it will give you another angle on the whole scheme of life/music/life.

Update:

May 22, 2010
Hours are 11:00 AM-4:00 PM.

Please bring instruments to SHOW, even if you're not looking to sell or trade.

Thanks for your comment Richard. I agree. Too many guitarists overlook this segment to their own detriment

Bruce-please take lots of pictures to share with us. Unfortunately, I have a previously-scheduled vacation and can't attend. Make sure to meet Barney. He organized the show and is putting it on for free-all expenses are coming out of his pocket. The guy just loves lap steels.
Hope you enjoy it!

Barney copied me on an email from "Joe Naylor" stating that he and his wife planned to attend. I was an early Reverend endorsee and have been friends with Joe for many years (since the Naylor amp days). Needless to say, I was disappointed since I'll be gone. Well, it turns out THE Joe Naylor is a guy who makes seats for steelers. At least now I don't feel so bad missing it.
