Recommend An Amp For A Steel Player

My cousin recently took up playing a lap steel. She's been using her daughter's '98 Vox Pathfinder (older NR model), but needs her own amp so they can play together (with husband on drums.) I'm thinking that one of Fender's Pawn Shop Series would work. But then again, I have no experience whatsoever with a lap steel. Got any recommendations for an amp under $500?

I have several amps including a 70's Fender Twin, Fender Blues Deluxe, Gibson Falcon but the one I like the most for all around is the Vox Modeling type. I have a VT 40 but there are several models with different outputs. They have a tube front end and the sound is really quite good. The reverb is pretty good considering it is digital. They are not too heavy and have tons of optional sounds.

Check out Quilter amps. They make some great sounding steel amps.

It's funny; when I started this thread almost two years ago, I looking for an inexpensive amp for my cousin. However, that's changed now since I've acquired a Rickenbacker lap steel for myself. For the most part, I've been practicing with it through using a Fender Champion 600. I have plugged it into a Victoria Victoriette and Dr Z Mini on a couple of occasions. Once I know what I'm doing, I think the Victoriette will be the primary amp.

I use a Fender Princeton (non reverb) for live steel work with my tiki band. The Fender Excelsior would also be a great amp for vintage lap steel sounds.

Just about any guitar amp will work. What sort of sound and volume level is she looking for?

I really like the old Valco amps. A super low watt Oahu is on my list.
