1981 320 truss rod system

Post by drathbun »

I'm confused about the truss rod system on my 320. I know how to adjust my two new Rics (2005 4003 and 2006 360/12) but is the system on my '81 320 one where you have to move the neck and then cinch up the truss rod as in early 4001 basses?

And in more words (my curse!) it's a bit touchier due to the shorter neck and reduction in leverage it brings.

Honestly, my short-scales seem to never need readjusting between the Rick .010 set and the .013 one. I've also tried .011 flatties from D'Addario with no change in rod adjustments...

My 320's neck is completely flat so I've never had a need to adjust it. I've only owned it for two years and, after the latest strip down, string change to D'Addario Chrome flats (.012), Scratch-X and Zymol treatment, I noticed that one of the rods is at the end of the turns on the nut and slightly bent. I'm wondering if someone adjusted it without knowing how to do it.

Hmm. I'd leave it alone. If it ever starts to drift, get a Rick-experienced repair person to give it a good going-over.
