Music Memories From Peter Gaskell Clarke

Post by admin »

Peter Gaskell Clarke kindly provided these memories of Liverpool Music in 1963. He wrote
It might be helpful if you knew that what came out of Liverpool in 1963' was not what was going on from 1958/9 thru 63. What came out was Pop/ Power Pop. What was actually going on was R & B , Hard Pop & Rock. Billy Kinsley's statement ( reiterated by Tony Crane) "If you did'nt see The Beatles at The Cavern, then you have'nt seen The Beatles" is so true.

Here's another example. A review of The Escorts quite correctly states "This is a weak Band." Going by the singles, Yep. However, The Escorts had nothing whatsoever to do with those singles. Live, they were a completely different Band. Judge for yourself, here is a list of Die-Hard Escorts fans one of whom owns John Kinrade's guitar, Amp & Cabinet. I'm sure you'll agree these people are not delusional: Ozzy Osborne; Lemmy Kilmister; Sting & Andy Summers; Hamish Stuart & Alan Gorrie; Robert Plant ; Peter Noone. There are others, but if you can get a message to any of this bunch of Escorts fans, I'll bet you'll get an answer in spades with the question; What kind of Band were The Escorts ?

In 1980 when "The Police" showed up, I knew exactly where that sound had come from, but I was'nt going to say anything . A short while later a friend, who was V. P. of Combat Records and an Escorts fan, gave me the official , ' Story of The Police' put out by their fan club. About the size of Vogue & printed on the same quality paper. She hands it over, and with a twinkle in her eye says " You should read this." Two-thirds in, the fan club Sec. asks Sting & Andy Summers "What would you call the sound of The Police ?" Back comes the answer "Well, you could say that we're The New Escorts" Now that's a hell of a compliment for a Band with a bunch of weak singles.

PS. Oh Darn it, I nearly forgot; Elvis Costello ( Sean McMannus). His dad would never forgive me for leaving him out . Peter
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm
