I have missed you Peter; welcome back. I was not aware of the Systems club interesting article .
Have you any comments on the new photograph of the exterior of the Iron Door club, this image of the club in Temple Street taken from a different angle depicts part of the building next door, this building was never occupied during the time I was in Temple Street, it had a beautiful colonial style stone frontage. The photograph was taken by Ursula Wildling from Hamburg Germany in 1965.

Geoff; look at the below inserted Google street-level view of Temple Street from Victoria Street ...
Temple Street.jpg
The red-brick office building directly on the corner of Victoria Street & Temple Street is known as Pacific Chambers.
The building immediately next to it on Temple Street is known as Colonial Chambers and is designated numbers 3 to 11.
The plaque commemorating the location of the Iron Door Club is on the wall of the offices directly opposite the red car parked part-way down Temple Street on the right-hand side.

Below is what a boarded up Colonial Chambers, 3 to 11 Temple Street looked like circa 1989 ...

Colonial Chambers was a shipping warehouse reportedly built in 1878. The building was intended to store cotton, spices and exotic foods and dyes shipped to Liverpool from the British colonies, hence the name.

Fast forward to 2019 and Colonial Chambers, 3 to 11 Temple Street, is a modern block of part offices, part service apartments - see ...

I'm not all that surprised Geoff that your uploaded image of the entrance to Iron Door Club is attributed to a German. Below is another view from a different angle courtesy of one Ulrich Brockelmann reputedly of Mönchengladbach ...

I can remember circa 1964 / 1965 a fair few German student-types in their long black leather coats showing up in Liverpool City Centre having made the journey to see for themselves, they did somewhat stand out by the way they dressed.

I just finished watching this video, Geoff. Even though I am not really up on the history I found it fascinating. Thanks so much for posting this.

As one of the last still remaining, who for a brief moment in time had a unique inside perspective of events, I also thank you (and friends) for making the video. It stands as a first person testimony of a particular musical gestation period in British youth culture that ultimately contributed to a global phenomenon which to this day, for better or worse, is still evolving.

Watching the video, the segment that chimed with me was the cake-making analogy made towards the end of video by one of the interviewees. If it took the best part of five years for groups to serve their apprenticeships in local clubs to ‘bake the cake’ that became known as the Liverpool Sound, then by 1963 that ‘cake’ had largely left Liverpool and was being eaten elsewhere. Geoff admitted so much himself when he referenced the problems he encountered booking groups for his then new Staircase Club venture. By 1963 all the hardened senior groups had moved on and out of Liverpool seeking greener pastures. What was left behind were merely younger substandard imitations ill-equipped to replace the popularity of their elders. Simply put they weren't up to the job, while they may well have had the desire they didn't have the talent.

This post is beginning to be interesting. First I would like to thank Jeffery for his observations. Moving on to my old friend Peter (Hamilton Square) I did not think it would be possible for another photograph of the exterior of the Iron Door to turn up!..How you have managed to find this' gem' is mind boggling,Peter Cormack and myself have searched years for such a photograph to appear. It would be the icing on the cake if the date of the photograph was known.
John Moores university funded a sell out event at the Royal Court (Liverpool) highlighting the Iron Door club. The film was a narration filmed on a large cinema screen at the back of the stage ,drama students from John Moores drama department enacted on stage their interpretation .

After a bit more digging, I’ve discovered that the person in the image I posted is named Ulrich Brockelmanns, member of a group called The Wallflowers hailing from the German city of Monchengladbach. The only image of the group I’ve been able to locate is below (Ulrich Brockelmanns is the tallest of the foursome).

I understand he was born 1946 with The Wallflowers forming in 1964. I also understand that according to an article dated 23 June 2016 in the German regional newspaper Aachener Zeitung, Ulrich Brockelmanns was still musically active performing for German senior citizens at ‘Tanztees' which I’ve learnt is German for Tea Dances.

I’ve also discovered that Herr Brockelmanns has a Facebook page (last updated 12 August 2018) at …

https://www.facebook.com/people/Ulrich- ... 4102570053

So, as a fellow Facebook user, I’ve taken the liberty on your behalf Geoff of sending him a message (with the aid of Google’s English-to-German translation tool) requesting the date it was when he happened to be posing at the entrance of the Iron Door Club having said photograph taken. I’ve also asked him to feel free to make any other comments connected to the event he may care to recall. I await his reply.
