Frank Zappa's 360/12 up for auction

Post by Burntweenie »

That's right - FZ's 1966 360/12 FG is up for auction (along with the sundry other guitars, recording/audio equipment and the sundry contents of his house, the latter being snapped up by Lady Gaga).

I never had FZ down as a Ric man, but you live and learn.

Guide of $3-5k USD. Sounds like a bargain - for those on the correct side of the pond :(

Thanks for posting this. Zappa is my favorite composer period. There should be college classes on Zappa and his works. It's really hard to see the performance strat coming up for auction, that should be Dweezil's. Met him last December & he's a nice guy BTW. That strat is why I have a piezo, tone sculpting and out of phase pickups in my 370. Dweezil & I chatted briefly about putting a sustainer in it.

Hell yes I want that 360...and the Roy Estrada Hofner bass. if only I hadn't just spent 10K on house repairs...none of which went to my studio

Totally agree, there should be far more 'high-brow' recognition of his work. All kinds of 2nd and 3rd rate modern composers get more exposure on BBC Radio 3 here in the UK. Ensemble Moderne played some of his stuff at a Prom back in '97, but apart from that, the most he gets is a name check. Grr!

As for the ZFT nonsense going on, it is very sad. It seems Moon and Dweezil have been royally stiffed - esp. DZ having FZ's guitars taken from him. The Yellow Strat is on my custom build list, after I get around to doing a Syd Barrett mirrored Esquire!

And if I lived in the US I would literally sell a kidney to buy that 360/12!

Yep, I'd also be all over that Hofner bass. I love that thing!

The 360/12 went for $16k USD. His '80s custom-built not-Str*t (the butterscotch one) went for $70k.

Big numbers.

Marketing is a wonderful thing! I've seen people talking online about this auction a lot for a couple of months.

You should have put your Bowie Rick up on the block when he kicked the bucket earlier this year. :P

Here's a good interview:

Always liked Frank's earlier stuff and Roy Estrada's playing in the Mothers but...

Guess it's another instance of being about the art, not the artist.
