Pickups: Toasters vs. Hi-Gains

Post by larsongs »

I'm sure this has been discussed before. I did a Search on You tube but didn't really find anything. I did a Search here & couldn't comparison reviews either. I must be typing in the wrong question??

Can we discuss this topic or post links? Even though, I'm sure, it's been done before.

Thanks,

L

There have been several versions of both types of pickups over the years so that may complicate the debate somewhat. To be perfectly honest though, I don't hear that much difference between any of them. They all sound like Rickenbackers to me.

You could install any pickup in a Rickenbacker guitar, it will always sound like a Rickenbacker.

the toasters emphasize the upper middle sonic area, which the higains do not do to the same extent, they are more 'hifi'.
Toaster give thus more 'jangle' which by the way -imho- especially happens on unwound G and B strings, not so much on the other strings.

Overwound toasters like in my V64 do not jangle at all.

Both my 360 6 & 12 strings are 90's & newer with Hi Gains which sound great IMO.

I've heard Vintage & they too sound great.

Why did Rick make the change?

Thanks
